Even before fuel injection many had an 'automatic'

Well, not exactly 'had to'. I watched from my apt
balcony after someone started such a car. I watched
the lady clean all the snow off while the engine warmed
up, probably red-lining the whole time. Probably her
hubby had told her to let it warm up before putting
it in gear, which caused a major CLUNK then CHIRP
then barely audible clicks as she tried to re-start.
