Is there only one such area? I've heard the term before and
just assumed that people close to any point where 3 states
come together at a point would locally call that 'the try-state area'.
When I tell people where I am, I usually say "right next to the tip of the West Virginia pan handle", to make it easy to visualize on a map. (Alternatively: "an hour from Pittsburgh".)  Since I'm less than a 10 minute drive from both Ohio and Pennsylvania, I reference "the tri-state area" frequently.
