auto repair shops have the same liability issues. customers
aren't allowed in the garage because it can be dangerous. i've
been going to the same shop for a couple decades and the owner
knows i know my way vehicle repair and shops and has no qualms
about me being in the shop. plus, i'm an honorable guy. if i get
hurt, it's my own damned fault, not theirs.

I venture into my mechanic's work area because he's typically working on
a car or sitting on the side next to a car on a lift. We're old buddies
by now. We like to talk about trends in automobile design/mechanics and
diabetes. I think he likes chatting - he's probably a little lonely
being by himself in his shop. Sometimes his dad is there - he used to be
a client of mine in my hearing aid business.
