Oh, what a shame. =( Maybe renting a car would be the safer way after all.

It would, but then you lose the reading time.
This is the truth, because I would be the one who would do all the driving. ;)

And the interior of even a top Amtrak roomette is old and spartan and full of squeaks and rattles.
And here I thought beautiful, aged, wood interior, roomy and comfortable, and very well insulated to block any outside noise. =(

There's not even a Trainforce One? =(

On the positive side the train personnel (mostly all black) are top notch, friendly, helpful and take their careers seriously.
Very good! I find that black people are much better at customer service than white people! =)

It harkens back to a time when the customer was king, and in a decent way.
Those were the days. The concept of customer is king is completely
absent in sweden. I try to live it in my own company, in combination
with choosing my customers very carefully. I find it a very good way to
run a business! =)

Just bring a flexible schedule and lots of atience and on any gven day you should be fine.
Well, sounds liket the swedish train system!

I guess I'm cherry picking.
Hmm, I see no difference, or very little difference between this one and
the 2000 trains. They are ok for day trips, but completely unreliable,
and never, ever, take the train in sweden during the winter. Everything
breaks down.
During spring/summer it tends to be ok though. Anothe pro-tip! Don't buy
the train internet, just use your cellphone. It will be faster and more
reliable.

Here's a trustworthy primer on Amtrak:

You can bird dog a lot of America with confidence in this couple.
They seemed suspiciously positive! Can such positive people be trusted?
;)

And please don't be put off by our shabbiness, it's really a freight rail nation this way.
No worries... I live in eastern europe now, and have seen my fair share of shabbiness. ;)

:-)

Indeed you have sir!
Based on careful analysis my wife and I agree. The roomette does seem
like the best option. For being food on a train, I think the steak
looked alright, especially compared with the garbage that is served on
planes! =)
The wife was not as impressed with the food though.
