I got married in 1966 and bought a 19" B&W portable TV made in the
USA and paid about $160 for it.  Over a week's pay at the time.  Look
at what I can buy today for the same real dollars price made in Asia.

I think it was the Apple CEO, after being criticised for having Apple
products made in Asia, who pointed out that the USA used to have
thousands of tool and die makers but now has only a hundred or so.

We don't have the need for them.  Can you imagine the cost of a phone if
it was made in USA with our labor rates?  Sales would nosedive and Tim
Cook would be working a part time job.

Is the solution to continue to buy products made by overworked underpaid
Asian children?  Compare the cost of manufacturing parts/labor in an
iPhone to what Apple sells it for...  They are marked up over 10 times!

The worst part is that people send these electronics with rare earth
metals in them straight to the dump instead of recycling.

At our dump,  (which is the only place to legally
dispose of your old  white goods, batteries, broken
furniture, scrap wood etc) *everything* is sorted into
different categories for recycling.

This is a separate facility from the domestic waste
collection service (where recyclable rubbish is also
sorted by each household into separate bins for recycling.
Paper and card/ metal and plastic/ food waste).

Most supermarkets also have a collection bins for glass,
clothing, shoes etc.

Charity shops will come and collect unwanted saleable
goods (furniture, toys, clothes etc) to sell and raise
funds.

 As a society,
we were a lot better off buying that USA made TV that cost a week's pay.
People actually took care of and appreciated the stuff that you had to
pay good money for.  Now, it's a disposable world.

Iy's a recyclable world, and less wasteful nations do
exactly that.
