I've never understood letting domesticated animals (cats or dogs) run

Nor me, or just putting them in the backyard and ignoring them.
our dog ran around all the time when we were young and
since there weren't that many people in the neighborhood
it didn't bother anyone. she wasn't a mean dog.
later on, after the houses got built along both sides
of the road then people started complaining because she'd
pee or poo on their perfect lawns.
eventually we had to get rid of her and took her to a
farm where she could be out, but it was hard on us and
her and i think my brother put her down. :(
i don't want or need any pets. i like all animals but
i don't like the amount of attention that dogs need and
cats are too destructive and messy indoors as i also don't
want them making noise at night.
i did like having a reef aquarium when i was up north
but moving happened and i sold all my tanks and equipment
so that was that. just a few plants now and i'm ok with
them as they go dormant for the winter just like the
gardens. :) perfect.
