But I've heard dog owners question the humanity of people
who don't have or want pets.

  i don't mind dogs or cats, but i don't want any
of my own.  plus they are carnivores and the world is
already being overrun by destructive gluttons so i
don't think having yet more animals to support is
good for the planet either.
