Funny you should mention canned green beans. I don't remember my
mother ever making the ubiquitous holiday "green bean casserole", yet
I found the recipe for it, in my mom's handwriting, taped to the
inside of one of the kitchen cabinets. Everyone knows the recipe:
canned "french-cut" green beans, a can of cream of mushroom soup
topped with canned fried onion. I keep it taped there for fun even if
it isn't nostalgic.

That is a funny thing to have taped inside the cupboard. My mother made
the ubiquitous green bean casserole one year for Thanksgiving. It was
pretty awful; never again. Fresh green beans roasted lightly in garlic
would be one of my favorites, however.

That is not as common up here as it i in the US. I always that it
sounded pretty bad. Then one Christmas dinner at my mother's she has
bought the ingredients and asked me to make it. I have to say it was
pretty damned good.
It's salty and greasy. If you can stand the overcooked green beans,
what's not to like?
