 In the 50s that would have been called an automatic toaster. I remember toasters with sides that opened out and the bread was laid on the rack. When one side was done you opened it up and flipped it to toast the other side.

My new toaster was delivered, but not to my house.  Evidently, reading ability is not a requirement to be an Amazon driver.  I found it next door.
I'm excited to use it tomorrow.  It has a feature I was unaware of.  The instructions are also in French, so, tomorrow I'm going to use it to make French toast!
