Is it noisy?  I think one of those self-cleaning litter boxes would
scare the crap (pun intended) out of my 8 month old kitten, Cleo.  Is
the one you got a covered litter box?  I doubt she'd be comfortable
using one of those.  She shies away from enclosed spaces.
 
I do agree, Amazon doesn't always have the best price.  I see an
automatic uncovered litter box on chewy.com for $170 but it seems to
require buying disposable litter trays containing crystal-type cat
litter.  Seems like constantly buying new litter trays would wind up
being expensive.  Since I'll likely be out of work come July, that's
something I have to take into consideration.  That, and the fact that
the litter box is in the (spacious) water closet area of the bathroom
(tub & toilet) but there are no electrical outlets in that space.

Good points.  One of my cats (Mona, terminal cancer when I adopted her
but wanted to be placed with her brother Luko), loved it (Mona).  Luko
ran from it.  Luko apparently had some urinary infections and blamed
cat litter.  He stopped using litter boxes when his sister died.  We
converted to washable cat pads ontop of gorilla mats (a sticky non-slip
web-like web you can cut to fit).

The pads aren't 100% leakproof after 100 or so washings so now we layer
paper/plastic potty pads that catch any leaks from the cat pads on the
top.  Fortunatly, he likes this arrangement and is very reliable about
using it.

If your curry furry friend likes cat litter, that's cheapest probably
but next up is my setup.  These pads have over 500 washings now and
other than the occasionally damp paper liner between pad/gorilla mat,
we just wash them for pennies.  We change the paper liners about every
3 weeks.  They cost 6cents each and we use the bigger cat pee pads so
it takes 2 paper liners.
