I believe dry sherry was big as a drink in the Netherlands, at least,

Fair enough. I wasn't legal to drink until halfway through the decade,
and I mainly drank beer.

I didn't wait with beer until it was legal, but I never drank sherry.
I didn't drink much before I turned 18, but I really went to town
afterward.
As a teenager I was not really into beer. At 20, I did go to the state (PA) run liquor stores and was never carded, mostly bought wine and fancy stuff like Seagram 7.
Maybe I looked older, but a 20, I was married and owned a house.
