I believe dry sherry was big as a drink in the Netherlands, at least,

Fair enough. I wasn't legal to drink until halfway through the decade,
and I mainly drank beer.
i was able to drink what i wanted any time and
even carried a flask of whisky around with me as
a teenager for a while. never got caught at
school. i did get caught by a teacher once
selling a few joints to a friend, but he didn't
report it - he probably smoked them himself.
good guy and i liked him. he was sort of a crusty
old codger but had a great dry sense of humor and
when i no longer had any classes with him i did
miss him.
i like bitter things and could appreciate a good
dark beer, but i found most mass produced beers to
be rather blah and not worth my time. i also liked
sweet drinks so something like a brandy alexander or
a pina colada were fine, but those could really
sneak up on you on a hot summer day. spiced rum and
cokes too... i'm glad i pretty much avoided being
a habitual drinker, probably because i saw what it
was doing or had done to most of my family and some
friends.
