When I washed dishes by hand, I favored a double sink or a single
sink with a dishpan, with a running-water rinse in the hottest
water my hands could tolerate. Then into the drying rack to
air dry. Naturally it was better if someone didn't randomly
fill the sink or dishpan with dishes, since flatware and glasses
came first, then dishes, then pots and pans.
Now I usually just put some dish soap on a paper towel to
clean sharp knives or whatever won't fit in the dishwasher.
