Weight. People who carry their laptop want to reduce weight.
Mine has a CD drive, but the whole laptop sure is bulky and heavy
compared to modern units.

I recently took a bag of old DVD's to a charity shop ..
which refused them because they are obsolete and "nobody
uses them". I offered them to our cleaner and she said the
same. I offloaded them on Freecycle.
We do still have a player and use DVD's; I've just
ordered DVD of Wolf Hall which we missed when it was
broadcast on TV 10 years ago.
They are an obsolete medium on computers. It's rare to find new
software or anything on disc. We still sell a lot of DVD's in our
second hand shop. $1-5 each depending on the title.

Nobody wants VHS tapes anymore, so I grab old Disney tapes for free when
I come across them. The kids don't care about the quality and still
enjoy watching them. Occasionally the babies like the bright colored
animations.
