I've replaced quite a few over the past 63 years of car ownership. If
the battery was more than three years old, I'd replace it in December
following year three. That way I was not jump starting and then
replacing it in a January snowstorm.

Last car was four years and replaced it before starting a rather long
trip out west, possibly many miles between auto shops. Cheap insurance.
The weather on the mainland must be brutal on car batteries in some
places. Out here, it never gets freezing or too hot. OTOH, The last
battery I replaced lasted a couple of years. Rather than have the
mechanic replace it under warranty for a hundred bucks or so, I bought
one from Sam's Club. I felt the need to get off of the battery
merry-go-round. Maybe to get a really good battery, you have to spend
$200 or more. Oh well.
