Unfortunately, when you live in the country you have to keep an eye on
your property line and exert your ownership.
correct. :)
i did call the landowner to the north today because i was also
curious about how his dad was doing (his dad lives the next house
to the north of us which is almost a half mile away). we'd noted
more activity there recently and have been a bit worried. his
dad is an ok guy. getting old sucks and the alternative is
worse...
When we first moved here we
had an orchard on one side of our property and the guy owned several
properties along our street and he was notorious for extending beyond
the property line and then claiming the land as squatter's rights.
some people can try to do that.
It backfired on him when he tried it with me. I had a visit from two
cops who said there had been a complaint alleging attempted murder. I
explained what happened. He had been disking across my property. I went
out with an axe and some survey stakes and pounded them in along the
property line. The jerk was ran some over so the next pass he made I
stood my ground. He told me to get out of the way. I said no, it's my
property keep off. He said "Get the fuck out of the way or I will run
you over" and then popped the clutch and lurched ahead. I took a step
back and swung the ax at the headlight. The part that was not planned
was where it snapped off and headed straight for his head and would have
hit him had he not ducked.
confrontations with weapons in the hand can get messy.
one time i was sitting with my back to the door holding
it closed when some drunk guy was trying to get in. glad
to say he didn't make it through the door. i had a hammer
in my hand, plus plenty of experience with hand-to-hand
fighting but i just didn't want to get into it with him as
i think it much wiser to avoid fights if i can.
On of the issues with squatters rights is being allowed to use the
property or no effort being made to stop it. I asked the cops to make
sure they put the land use issue in their report so that I had good
evidence that I had physically deterred him from using my property.
That was the last time he tried that with me and I became a hero to the
other neighbours that he continued to hassle.
some people need a boot in the pants from time to time to
keep them in line.
