What are the problems with tilapia farming?
AI Overview
The main problems associated with tilapia farming include: overcrowding
leading to disease outbreaks, heavy reliance on antibiotics due to poor
water quality, potential for environmental damage from waste discharge,
invasive species concerns from escaped tilapia, and concerns about the
nutritional value of farmed tilapia compared to wild fish; with many
issues arising from intensive farming practices in crowded conditions.
I'm not too concerned about intensive farming practices in crowded
conditions involving tilapia. The fish seem to be okay with all that.
They can survive in the worst conditions you can imagine. It's the
reason da Hawaiians hate tilapia - they thrive in stinky, dirty, water.
OTOH, you could start a tilapia farm with just some plastic tanks and
flowing water. They are the ideal, sustainable, white fish. I'm just
happy that people on the mainland seem to enjoy that fish. It was with
the tilapia that Jesus fed the multitudes in the bible. In modern times,
it is still possible to feed thousands with 2 small tilapia - but only
if they're Hawaiians.
