I have to count my blessings. Our provincial government wanted to
downsize and offered an early retirement package. I was eligible for
full pension and benefits at 53. I would have liked to stay on until my
son finished university but if I did not leave in that 6 month window I
would have been stuck there for another 5 years. There was also the
possibility of being laid off. Not thanks. I took it and ran and I have
not looked back.

We got a new department manager, and he flew in from Houston
to meet us one on one.  He asked me where I saw myself in a
few years and I told him I was leaving at age 66 and one month
so I could receive full SS benefits.  At this time it was spring
and I was 64 and mid-summer he called and asked if he could get
me a full years salary, would I be willing to leave early?  Of
course!
After waiting for months I was presented with the choice of a
lump sum (no insurance) or I could continue my full salary and
all benefits for an entire year.  I chose the full salary and
benefits as I was 65 and when that year was up I slid right
into Social Security.
