"You can read all the answers here, and they all raise valid points, but there’s one thing they are missing.  Food was sensationally dull in the 1970s.
When I grew up, spaghetti Bolognese was a taste explosion, restaurant menus would warn you if there was garlic in a dish, ordinary yellow Madras curry was considered “spicy”, and when you wanted your food to be incredibly exotic, you added diced pineapple.
You never over-ate. You ate until you were no longer hungry, because there was nothing fun about eating, no pleasant sensation to be had."
