me they've always been distinct things for their own uses.
even when i mix them together i'm aware of what taste i'm
after as a result.  pretty much the best thing to me is that
they are consistent enough that i don't have to guess.

 My mother disliked mayonnaise and always used Miracle Whip. I never cared much for it but I didn't know the difference until I got married and my wife insisted on mayo. I learned to prefer mayo but, perhaps due to  my early experiences, I never really got into the habit of using it.
