Do a search for "prepper food" and you will see their are many
sources of food kits that may work for you.  I imagine you'd
supplement a kit with other items, but this would be a good start.

Believe it or not - it never even occurred to me that this
fell into the category of "prepping". However, the "Soylent"
link got me to search for getting that in Australia, and I

equivalent in Australia, which is far more reasonably priced
than the prepping stuff - I don't need it to last 25 years like
the readywise.
 
Note that water is chlorinated in Sydney, so that's not
an issue. But I don't want to waste precious electricity
on heating water.
 
BTW, this is more "minimalism" than "prepping".
 
There have been some more developments too. I have
bought and used many powerbanks, but in all my
searches I never came across the term "laptop powerbank",
so I didn't think it was possible to power my laptop, even
thought it takes USB-C power.
 
Turns out that it is possible, I just needed the right cable
(USB-C to USB-C PD - power delivery) to get it to work
(and one of my powerbanks capable of 65W needs me to
power off my laptop before it will charge - which is fine).

device so long as it draws a reasonable amount of electricity.

For about 200$ more you get 100w solar panels.  Double it and you get
the Jackery 1000 which is really sweet.

I have the Jackery explorer 500 and a ecoflow river 2 unit.  Other than
small solor panel motion spotlights, all other solar powerpanels are on
my roof (21 of them).

I saw lots of ecoriver units on the .AU site.  They aren't great but
they do the job.  The power flow is less even with the ecoflow though
so might not want the laptop on it while using it,  Instead, power down
and charge the laptop's battery then detach.  With the Jackery, no such
issues.

I actually have a Fidonet background so I intend to convert
the UUCP bundles so that I can use existing Fidonet software,
but that's a separate exercise.

Shenk's Express alive and well here.  Though a few of the members draw
the RFC feed via Fido, generally the group doesn't know what it is and
no explainations have worked.  Offline OLR, yes that's the way to go
off the laptop.  I use Xananews which is really an OLR for newsgroups.
