Why didn't you crack the egg on the edge of the bowl?

 A lot of people crack eggs on a flat surface, to reduce the
likelihood of driving fragments of shell into the egg.
 

I suppose they do but Ed said he cracked it on the edge of the sink and the egg went down the drain.  Might have been better if he cracked it on the edge of the bowl he was going to use to scramble it.  I'm pretty sure he doesn't scramble eggs in the sink.
Speaking of scrambled eggs, yes, I do crack them on the edge of a shallow bowl.  I rarely have issues with shell fragments in the bowl.
