number of books about WW II and air force stuff lately and recently came
across a factoid that in WWII there were more training deaths in
training and in accidents than in combat.

 Helicopter accidents are notoriously difficult to walk away from.
They don't glide very well.
 

Since the thread drifted to films with helicopters, it's notable actor Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed in a helicopter crash during the filming of 'Twilight Zone: The Movie' in 1982.  Morrow and one of the child actors were decapitated and the other child crushed under the helicopter wreckage.  Pyrotechnic movie effects were blamed for causing the crash.
