 There are stories in the media about people visiting the US being put
in detention for days or even a few weeks, for unclear reasons,
without any charges ever being pressed. Also stories about hostile
customs people. The Dutch government's telling LGBT people to inform
and prepare themselves before travelling to the US, also depending to
which state.
 Doesn't sound like a country you want to visit for a holiday.
 

I have no plans, but I'd not go to Canada or Mexico now.  In the past going to either one, I just flashed an ID and off you go.  I'd be leery of border crossing in either direction right now.
