They were pretty complicated devices though.
As I recall with a similar car(*), you had to give it
one pump slow enough to sort of prime it but not
fast enough to flood it. You had to know how to
'dry' a flooded carburator, and you needed to hold
the throttle about 1/4 open when < ~ -20C.
Okay, probably it needed an adjustment of sorts.
(*) Yes, it was the same car I told the story about
my Dad using to create FAE's that sent 30' fireballs
to the car behind us on the gravel road after a minor
breach of automotive etiquette.
Not deliberate of course. You usually don't do stuff
like that with with wife & kids in the car.
