What the hell does Bruce have against corn?  He's always yapping about
it.  Just for fun I'm going to cook some corn on the cob tonight.

It just seems to be one of those issues that he uses to get the
attention he craves.

Now I'm wondering. Is corn that people eat always sweet corn, which is
not GM most of the time? Where does non sweet corn go? Animal fodder?
Maybe I have to talk to my artificially intelligent acquaintance about
this.

Corn that is eaten as a (reasonably) fresh vegetable is "sweet" corn.
It's harvested at an immature stage, so its sugar content is higher
and its seed coat is softer.

"Dent" corn is used for animal feed and as feedstock for industrial
processes such as ethanol or high-frucose corn syrup manufacture.  It's
also used for cornmeal, grits, polenta, and masa harina.

A third type, "flint" corn, is grown in much lower quantities.  Popcorn
is flint corn, as is the colored corn used as autumnal decorations.

it is also good to note for people who don't understand that
if you have GMO corn growing around non-GMO heirloom corn
varieties that you have to be very careful to avoid cross-
contamination of the GMO varieties ending up in the non-GMO
varieties.

this can be done by having very different maturity dates
so that while one is pollination it doesn't mess with the
others.

since this is not always possible you will find that many
hierloom varieties are going extinct and even Mexico is
losing many of their varieties.

  industrial agriculture is rather brutal.

aside from those reasons we don't grow corn here at all as
the fields around us are often growing GMO corn and then we
have so many raccoons that trying to grow sweet corn is an
exercise in futility.  we'd need electric fencing of very
high quality to protect the crop if we wanted to get any
results.
