I sold the sterling silver flatware to Replacements years ago. I'm not
interested in having to polish tableware.
silver was up to $120/troy ounce or more about six months
ago. the price has come down by about half since then...
some people don't know what they have in gold or silver in
terms of value even at melt prices. so if you are one of
those people who likes to be out and about and shopping it
can be very much worth it to look for scrap gold and silver
but you do have to know what you are looking at and be
willing to test as the difference between gold plated or
gold filled scrap and actual solid karat gold, etc. can be
rather large. i don't do this kind of thing myself as i
don't like being out or going to estate sales or auctions.
we had some friends who had 18 full sets of fine china.
when one of them passed away the other found someone who
was willing to buy 17 of the 18 sets that they wanted to
sell. we'd need to buy a whole other house to store all
the stuff they had squirrelled away - as it was it did
take him a few years to clean out the basement which was
loaded with all that.
i'm very glad that pretty much everything i own fits in
this small room - if i have to buy anything now it means
i need to get rid of something else.
