You don't need MS Word at all. We use Libre Office, which is entirely
free, and available for Linux, macOS and Windows. Open Document is its
native format; MS Word also handles that.

The writer's guide is available as MS Word and Open Office documents, and
works the same way for both. We provide it that way because it provides
an easy way of getting the styles and layout.

If you really dislike GUI editors, send us plain text, and we'll lay it
out in Libre Office and send you a PDF to check.
