Think about a scenario like this: family finally investigates monster the kid has been hearing. Turns out to be bees.
Which actually are not bees at all but some alien infestation that makes blood-colored honey from blood.
It's more relevant to me since I had my second favorite character killed by bees and torn up by the DM. I also have an indent in the quick under my ring fingernail from when I was stung as a toddler.
