Guided by Ono, Lennon embraced the figures and the causes of the Yippie
movement i the early 70s.  This phase of Lennon's life and work peaked
with the wretched Sometime In New York City album, for which Lennon
recruited the unwashed, dope-fried and musically inept Elephant's Memory
band as sidemen.  Lennon's songs on this album reflect the causes of
Abbie Hoffman, who was particularly up in arms over John Sinclair's
imprisonment for marijuana possession.
Lennon's attitude contrasted with that of Pete Townshend of the Who.  In
the middle of the Who's set at Woodstock, Abbie Hoffman invaded the
stage and wailed into the microphone his objection to John Sinclair's
imprisonment.  Before he could say much more Townshend struck Hoffman
with his guitar (that unfortunate Gibson SG really took a beating) and
kicked him in the ass, sending him flying.  "Get the f*ck off my f*cking
stage," Townshend snarled.  Hoffman ran away from the stage, and
supposedly continued running for some distance.
