The "form over content" marketing also applies to the fake stereo
of the Furtwangler and Karajan box sets, which neither bothered
to mention anywhere in the box sets, making it even more as a pig
in a poke.
It's interesting, in a sense, that the "technical" part of a music
recording, the audio engineering itself, tends to be the most obscure
in the materials. Little or no information may be provided, dubious
choices made without justification, etc. Obviously this affects
the digital releases too, so isn't a function of changing listening
habits there, although it may be a function (partially) of changing
listening equipment....
