This wonderful live recording, of a concert on 13 March 1955, is not mentioned in the book 'Bruckner en het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest' published in 1997 (see pp 134-139 for released as well as unreleased recordings; this concert is listed on p 157).
Eduard van Beinum had conducted this Symphony "No. 0" in D Minor seven times: once in 1934, three times in 1935 and three times in 1942. (Mengelberg never conducted it.)
In 1966, Bernard Haitink made a studio recording with the same orchestra, characterized by his usual perfectionism, restraint and good taste. From the first note, Van Beinum's performance is much livelier and warmer.
On 25 November 2008 I wrote:
<< Haitink's recordings from the 1960s and 1970s [of Bruckner 0 and 1] are fine, but I wonder how [the second movement of 0] would have sounded if Georges Blanchard [in the orchestra 1904-1943, died 1954] had played the oboe.>>
Now I know! More or less as on the Van Beinum recording. Although the oboist wasn't Blanchard, this one (Haakon Stotijn?), like Blanchard, used hardly any vibrato, at least here.
Judge for yourself!
