<< [...] Scherchen is often accused of being "eccentric" but in this work (as in so many others, IMHO) he imbues with it the precise qualities that the work needs to be put across the way it was intended to be. It was after all a *mass* & Scherchen presents it as a deeply-felt, "spiritual" event. Very moving. However if you are looking for efficiency or the latest in scholarship, look elsewhere...

REC.MUSIC.CLASSICAL.RECORDINGS was great, in its heyday.
I have not found a substitute.

I did not know or correspond with Mr. Ventrone, but out of curiosity, I searched for information about him on the internet. (His middle initial was 'A' and he used to work for a certain company in Bedford, MA, USA.)
