Listened to a few of his symphonies again in an attempt to reevaluate Celibidache‘s Beethoven of which I have also grown more - actually I was critical of his Beethoven all along, but of others’ as well… and wrt some details he is actually inspiring - as is some of the sound he draws from the orchestra, every instrument actually, maybe very clearly the violins and brass. So, the thing is, I clearly like Bach and Schubert - not to mention Mozart - more than Beethoven, these days I’d also rather listen to more modern stuff than Beethoven — I feel Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schoenberg, Webern and also Berg‘s music to be more reflected (not more „thought out“ but more reflected). I also don’t feel I need Haydn… not really anything i find very good… and Schumann hmmm… not either I guess.. not saying they’re trash composers, I still rate them above all the other unmentioned composers I know about…
