On an almost related note, I just went through a Cabezon marathon. Quintessential mid-sixteenth century keyboard virtuoso, his music is very nicely portable to viola or brass ensembles. His diferencias are definitely the best contributions to the early development of the keyboard variation genre, well before Byrd and colleagues. Most of his music was collected in a posthumous anthology edited by his son (Obras de Musicas), and Claudio Astronio recorded it in full between 1995 and 2010 alternating between keyboards and instrumental groups. Recommended for completists (similar length as the Moroney Byrd set). In 2011 the harpsichordist Glen Wilson recorded all the diferencias and tientos (ricercars), including the ones that were published during Cabezon's lifetime. This remains an easy recommendation for an introduction to Cabezon's best music. Also recommended (in chronological order), the 1972 anthology (given the time of recording, a perfect concept-album) by the Ricercare-Ensemble für Alte Musik Zürich on instrumental variations in the Spanish renaissance, the 1983 Savall album (mostly instrumental), and the 1993 album of Spanish and Portuguese harpsichord music by Sophie Yates.
