Well, I guess one of the populist-avant-garders "et al" is Ligeti who in fact wrote a Ricercare as an explicit homage to Frescobaldi in 1951, the same year as Stravinsky's Rake's Progress (never-populist-no-longer-avant-guarde), Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues (sometime-populist-never-avant-guarde), Hindemith's Die Harmonie der Welt Symphony (never-populist-never-avant-guarde), Carter's String Quartet No.1 (never-populist-always-avant-guarde) and Stockhausen's Kreuzspiel (at-that-time-very-much-anti-populist-avant-garde-jury-still-out-about-what-happened-to-him-down-the-road). Also the year of Henze's Boulevard Solitude and Britten's Billy Budd, incidentally.
