When Bob Dylan went looking for Dave Stewart

"Here's a wee story I thought I'd share. It goes that, once upon a time
(in the early 90's), legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan travelled to
London to visit his friend Dave Stewart of Eurythmics after they had
worked together in the 80's and being invited to "stop by anytime he was
in London". Upon arriving at Heathrow, Bob flagged a taxi and gave the
driver a partial address that had been hastily written down when he had
last seen Stewart several years ago. The address said "145 Crouch..."
but that was all. The only problem is that there are several streets in
the Crouch End area that begin like this so the driver took his best
guess at where to deliver his famous passenger - 145 Crouch End Hill.
Anyway, Bob rings the doorbell of no. 145 and it was answered by a lady
and he told her "Hi, I'm here to see Dave." Not recognising the legend,
the lady told him that 'Dave' was out but should be back in around 20
minutes and that he could wait in the living room. After a short while
'Dave The Plumber' returns (you can probably guess where this is
going...) and nearly collapses to discover that his all-time hero was
sitting in his front room drinking tea and chatting to his girlfriend.
Apparently Bob, upon realising his mistake, was quite happy to stay and
chat, play some records and talk about all things musical with the
couple and even, so the story goes, persuaded his new friend Dave to
propose to his long-term partner!
Is this true? Nobody really knows for sure but I first heard this story
on an episode of Urban Myths - 'Knocking on Dave's Door' and decided to
do a bit of digging... The tale has been at least partially confirmed by
Dylan's record label and there are others that swear they heard the
story from the 'real' Dave Stewart himself so, being that it's such a
lovely anecdote, I'd like to think that it did actually happen. In the
words of Tony Wilson "When you have to choose between the truth and the
legend, choose the legend." I wonder if Bob ever did find Dave's actual
house though..."
