"Accident of Nature"

Weeping willow, outside my window,
Why do you weep?
I look at you, and I feel like weeping, too.
I was lying on my bed, so I closed my eyes.
I went up into my head, and I really did try,
Not to let you make me feel sad, or cry.
What can I say about the willow tree?
Is she there to keep me company?
To remind me that I'm not alone?
On days like today when I'm at home?
And no one seems to call on the phone?
And I get lonely, and wonder, what should I do?
Willow, I tried to forget about you.
I thought I wanted you to go away.
But, like a friend, in my mind, you knowingly did stay.
You quietly refused to go away.
And now it's quite clear, now I surely see -
My melancholia came not from that tree!
Weeping willow, it is not true!
I was already feeling down and blue
When I went to my bed and gazed out upon you.
And now look at what
You've gone and done!
You've given me a poem,
Which has been so much fun.
I am forever grateful, forever in your debt,
Though your reason for weeping still troubles me yet.
I love feeling happy, I love being free.
Is there anything, anything, I can do for that tree?
They say that the answer is in the question,
And though now it seems obvious, I just can't help but mention:
A poem lives forever,
But not so a tree.
So here in my poem
She will eternally be.
