There are certainly some good bargains available these days.
Once I learned that some older *full-frame* DSLRs are available at
affordable prices now, I gave serious consideration to getting one.
Eventually, I made my decision, and purchased a Nikon D700. I was
considering the purchase of a Canon 5D instead, but I decided that I
would do even better by purchasing a Nikon D200 to go along with the
Nikon D700.
On eBay, I was able to purchase, again at quite reasonable prices, a
fairly full assortment of lenses; a basic macro zoom, a nice f/2.8
telephoto zoom with ED lenses, and an f/1.4 AF prime, among others.
But I noticed that the inexpensive lenses from China that had very wide
apertures and in some cases copied the designs of ancient bokeh
champions... were mostly for mirrorless cameras.
It seemed like I would need one with at least an APS-C sensor to get the
full range of results I would like. But in general, there aren't any
cheap mirrorles cameras like that out there, although some of the early
SONY cameras come close. One that seemed attractive, though, had a
screen and a digital viewfinder that were very limited in resolution,
which was going to be an issue if I was getting the camera to mainly use
manual focus lenses with it.
I learned that the Nikon 1 series, like the Nikon 1 J1, uses a really
small CX format sensor, so I needed to leave that out of consideration.
And I've now learned that there are also inexpensive "speedbooster"
focal length reducers available out there, so I may be able to
affordably get into Barry Lyndon territory if I can find the right
mirrorless.
