Old Barney Amateur Radio Club Founders Celebrate 50th Field Day

Old Barney Amatuer Radio Club (OBARC)

This year, on June 22, 2024, two longtime Old Barney Amateur Radio Club
(OBARC) members in Manahawkin, New Jersey, commemorated their 50th year of
participating in ARRL Field Day. Bob Schenck, N2OO, and Steve Sullivan, KZ2I,
joined the club's current members for the event held at Wells Mills Park in
Waretown. Notably, their first Field Day as a group occurred in Warren Grove
NJ.

Bob and Steve went on to establish the Old Barney Amateur Radio Club. The
club's name draws inspiration from the nearby Barnegat Lighthouse,
affectionately nicknamed "Old Barney." The OBARC Field Day tradition has
endured ever since, and the club itself will reach its 50th anniversary in
2025.

NI6BB to Remember the Battle of Inchon

As the representative of the National Museum of the Surface Navy at
Battleship IOWA (BB-61) in San Pedro, California, the Battleship IOWA Amateur
Radio Association (BIARA) will activate NI6BB in memory of Operation Chromite
on September 15, 1950.

During the Korean War, 1,789,000 United States military personnel served in
the Korean theater of operations resulting in 137,250 casualties with 36,940
killed in action. There were 3,737 soldiers missing in action. The activation
of NI6BB will be to honor American veterans and their United Nations allies
who served during the Korean War.

Activation will be on Sunday, September 15, 2024, from 0800 to 1600 PDST
(1500 to 2300 UTC). Visit https://biara.org [ https://biara.org/ ] for a list
of modes and frequencies, as well as QSL instructions. Bands and modes
activated will be dependent on propagation and BIARA associate participation.

Club Grant Update

ARRL Foundation
[https://www.arrl.org/the-arrl-foundation]

The ARRL Foundation Club Grant Program has received 110 applications this
year with projects ranging from simple to complex. The Grant Review Committee
will now be evaluating each application and making the difficult decision of
which ones to fund. Decisions will be announced later this year, and grants
will be awarded before the end of the year. Thanks to funding from ARDC, the
Club Grant Program will award $500,000 to clubs for projects in their
community. Emphasis is given to programs with transformational capabilities.
This round of grants will bring the total grant amount awarded to clubs
through this program to $1,000,000. More information about the Club Grant
Program and the ARRL Foundation can be found at The ARRL Foundation [
https://www.arrl.org/the-arrl-foundation ] .

Submitting Info for this Newsletter

ARRL Club News is for radio clubs to show how they are working in the
community and the hobby to advance amateur radio. If your club completes a
project, supports an event, does an EmComm activation, or activates a park,
we want to hear about it. You can submit your newsletter article to us at
clubs@arrl.org [ mailto:clubs@arrl.org ] . We like to get them as text or
Word files instead of PDFs. If you have pictures, please submit them with
caption information, as well as the name and call sign of the photographer.
We want to highlight the good work being done by the clubs and show others in
the community. Think of this as a chance to show off your club and your
programs.
