2025 ARRL Field Day: FAQ with the Contest Program Manager
The days are longer, the weather is warmer, the calendar will say "June" on
Sunday. That means we are in the countdown to 2025 ARRL Field Day! There's a
lot of excitement building around the theme of "Radio Connects" and hams
across North America are preparing for the big weekend of June 28 - 29.
In their efforts to prepare for the activations, many radio amateurs are
researching the finer points of Field Day rules. All the information is
available on the ARRL Field Day website at
www.arrl.org/FieldDay [
http://www.arrl.org/FieldDay?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] , but ARRL Contest Program Manager Paul Bourque, N1SFE, wants to make sure
hams can find answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Q: I'm interested in participating in Field Day for the first time this year.
How can I find a club near me that's hosting Field Day so that I can join in
on the fun?
A: You can search for nearby Field Day sites with the Field Day Site Locator
at
www.arrl.org/field-day-locator [
https://www.arrl.org/field-day-locator?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] . The tool provides locations, talk-in frequencies, and contact information
for sites located throughout the Unites States and Canada.
Q: Which digital modes are allowed during Field Day?
A: Any digital mode that can support the required Field Day exchange may be
used.
Q: I plan on operating portable during Field Day as a single operator. Am I
allowed to operate from multiple locations throughout the event? Class B
(portable) stations are fixed stations.
A: All equipment must be located within a circle whose diameter does not
exceed 300 meters (1,000 feet). The only Field Day operating class that's
allowed to operate from more than one location is Class C (mobile). A mobile
station must have all equipment in or on the vehicle and must be capable of
being operated while in motion. For example, you can't mount a telescoping
mast to your trailer hitch and erect a full-sized beam or vertical antenna.
Q: Where can I find out more about ARRL Field Day?
A: There's a wealth of additional information available at the ARRL Field Day
website,
www.arrl.org/FieldDay [
https://www.arrl.org/field-day?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] . Click on the Rules and Resources link where you'll find rules,
information packets, and more answers to frequently asked questions. There's
also a FAQ published in the 2025 ARRL Field Day Guide, starting on page 57 of
the June issue of QST.
Borque says that if there's a specific question that's not covered here, in
the Field Day guide in QST, or on the website, contact
fdinfo@arrl.org [
mailto:
fdinfo@arrl.org ] .
Also, don't forget the ARRL Field Day merch! T-shirts (complete with sections
checklist on the back), pins, patches, stickers, posters, and more may be
ordered from the ARRL Store [
http://www.arrl.org/field-day-store.html?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] . Place your order soon to ensure your swag gets to you in time for the big
event!

Amateur Radio Ready for Above Average Hurricane Season
Hurricane season begins on Sunday, June 1. The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts this season to be above-normal [
https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/noaa-predicts-above-normal-2025-atlantic-hurricane-season] in activity, citing above-average Atlantic Ocean temperatures. The
scientists say the season will likely produce between 13 and 19 named storms,
including 3 - 5 major hurricanes.
Amateur radio provides a robust toolset, a trained volunteer corps, and
durable infrastructure for emergency preparedness. There are several ham
radio nets that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) relies on to inform
forecasts through surface observations made by the volunteer operators.
ARRL encourages all amateurs to participate in the Hurricane Watch Net [
http://www.hwn.org/ ] , the VOIP Weather Net [
https://voipwx.net/ ] and
others that provide support and information via WX4NHC, the amateur radio
station at the NHC [
https://w4ehw.fiu.edu/ ] .
ARRL Director of Emergency Management Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, says each ham's
individual observations can make all the difference in a critical situation.
"We know of stories from hurricanes in the past where a report from a ham
radio station changed the forecast for landfall and impact by the NHC.
We are also aware of information being shared of people being trapped and
were able to get assistance to those victims after the storm." Amateur radio
operators provide an important tool before, during and after a storm.
The Hurricane Watch Net is hosting a special operating event to mark its 60th
anniversary [
https://www.arrl.org/news/hurricane-watch-net-remembers-and-celebrates-60-years?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] on June 7 - 8.
ARRL Public Relations and Outreach Manager Sierra Harrop, W5DX, says recent
storms underscore the value of amateur radio When All Else Fails(R). "During
Hurricane Helene [
https://www.arrl.org/news/ham-radio-serving-southeast-us-recovery-efforts?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] , it was the volunteer hams who jumped into action to relay health and
welfare information [
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk2FLaetmY8 ] .
As mountainsides washed away, the repeaters on top were still working.
Licensed amateur radio operators took to the air [
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jXb9zwnO70 ] using their own equipment to
provide a link of important information that no other means could.
During Hurricane Ian, a ham saved lives on Sanibel Island [
https://arrl-nfl.org/2022/10/11/2402/ ] by providing emergency crews the
information they needed to rescue a family from rising flood waters."
ARES(R) at NVOAD ahead of Hurricane Season
ARRL's Amateur Radio Emergency Service(R) (ARES(R)) [
https://www.arrl.org/ares?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] program provides a framework for volunteer groups to integrate with served
agencies in their local communities to use the value of the Amateur Radio
Service before and during times of crisis.
Last week, ARES was represented by Johnston at the National Voluntary
Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) [
https://www.nvoad.org/ ]
conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
Johnston met with leaders of dozens of organizations to raise awareness and
build relationships. "Blue skies are the time to build bridges and make
plans.
Many groups have used ham radio for years, but it's always encouraging to
share information with people who may not understand the capabilities and
value ham radio provides," he said.
Johnston was also a speaker last month at the amateur radio workshop at the
National Hurricane Conference.

ARRL Teachers Institute Set for Record Year
The ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology [
http://www.arrl.org/ti?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] (TI) has 13 sessions announced in 2025, with more in the works. The program
is a donor-funded professional development program designed to help classroom
teachers elevate their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) programs using wireless technology.
"This is all possible because of the high level of confidence that our donors
have in the program. We are grateful that many have stepped up to make this
all possible," said ARRL Director of Development Kevin Beal, K8EAL. Through
donations to the ARRL Education and Technology Program, donors have entrusted
ARRL to help teachers integrate amateur radio into their curriculum.
The support has been from all levels.
During a YouTube telethon to benefit the program, individual hams contributed
more than $21,000, which unlocked another $20,000 challenge gift [
https://www.arrl.org/news/41-000-raised-by-donors-youtubers-for-arrl-teachers-institute?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] from donors.
David Ginsburg, N3BKV, funded an endowment in the name of his parents.
The Hy and Mimi Ginsburg Educator position [
https://www.arrl.org/news/generational-legacy-carried-on-in-arrl-teachers-institute?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] is the first of several major gifts to the program.
"We are so excited that we get to grow the program this year," said ARRL
Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA.
Part of that growth has involved making sessions available in local
communities [
https://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-teachers-institute-coming-to-a-town-near-you?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] across the country.
After a successful first remote session was held on Staten Island, another
will take place next week in Louisiana.
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab is hosting one [
https://www.arrl.org/news/johns-hopkins-university-to-hold-arrl-teachers-institute?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] later in the year.
"The success of the program is evident, but the lasting impact may go even
further than we can measure today," said Goodgame.
Network media outlets have covered programs built by TI graduates [
https://www.arrl.org/news/student-led-ariss-contact-a-success?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] , and there are hundreds of active hams in the schools [
https://www.arrl.org/news/new-york-high-school-helps-license-amateur-radio-operators?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL] that TI graduates lead.
The momentum continues to build around the program. "We're seeing a huge
response from the education world. Word is spreading, and teachers are
excited for what the TI can help them accomplish," said Goodgame.
Beal says those wishing to contribute to this entirely donor-funded program
can visit

In Brief...
The Fort Myers Amateur Radio Club [
https://fmarc.net/news/ ] (FMARC) has
received the Parks on the Air(R) (POTA) Wiggin's Acalypha achievement award,
honoring dedication to amateur radio and a passion for public lands.
The award is named after a native plant to highlight the program's nature
connection, and is presented to operators who have either activated or hunted
700 unique POTA reference areas.
POTA is a global amateur radio initiative that encourages licensed radio
operators to set up portable stations in state and national parks, historic
sites, and other public lands.
Since its launch in 2017, following the success of the ARRL's National Parks
on the Air (NPOTA) event, POTA has grown into a vibrant community of over
325,000 participants worldwide.
The program promotes outdoor recreation, emergency communication
preparedness, and environmental stewardship, while fostering connections
between radio operators across the globe.
The FMARC, established in 1957, supports the exchange of knowledge, fosters
camaraderie among hobbyists, and emphasizes public service during
emergencies.
An ARRL Affiliated Club, FMARC promotes the art and science of amateur radio
through various activities, training, and initiatives.

The Schaumburg Amateur Radio Club [
https://www.n9rjv.org/ ] has introduced
Scouts to amateur radio.
On May 19, the Scouts of Troop 37, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, discovered
a trio of antennas and radio stations waiting for them at their outdoor
meeting location.
A short presentation explained how amateur radio is used in the community,
licensing steps, how radio waves work, ham radio "lingo" and callsigns,
equipment basics, and safety.
The Scouts divided into three groups and moved between the stations, making
QSOs on UHF, VHF, and HF radios.
Operators in northern Illinois and nationwide were alerted to listen for
calls from the Scouts and it worked.
The Scouts were kept busy on the air! Every Scout had contacts on each band
from many operators in northern Illinois and across 15 states from Nevada to
Maine.
One Scout enjoyed speaking with John D.
Williamson, W5SLO, in Texas, while looking him up online and admiring his
Jeep.
Scouts were also amazed to speak to mobile operators, causing one to ask,
"Are you driving the speed limit?" The reply, "Sure am!" Another Scout, along
with his father standing nearby, both let out a big smile when they were
heard by Marion Mason, W1GRL, and discovered she is in the small town of Bar
Harbor, Maine, population 5,000, where they will be vacationing this summer.
Amateur radio helped them make a new friend! Troop leaders agreed it was
great to see the Scouts' parents on the microphones as well.

The ARRL Solar Report
ARRL Solar Report May 29, 2025
Solar activity reached moderate levels early this past week with several
flares.
An X1-class flare erupted mid-week but activity has slowed down with the
majority of the low-level C-class flares.
A coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed on May 27 with a flare from Region
4100.
Modelling determined the CME to be well behind Earth's orbit.
No other potentially Earth-directed CMEs were detected in available
coronagraph imagery.
M-class flare activity, minor - moderate, is likely, with a slight chance for
X-class flare events, strong or greater, through May 30.
The 10.7-centimeter flux: May 30, 130; May 31, 125; June 1, 120; June 2, 115;
June 3 - 4, 110; June 5, 115.
Radio Blackout Forecast: R1 - R2, minor-moderate, radio blackouts are likely,
with a slight chance for isolated R3, strong or greater, events over May 29 -
30.
Enhanced solar wind conditions are expected through May 30 as solar wind
high-speed streams (HSS) activity persists. There will likely be a transition
into larger trans-equatorial coronal holes (CH HSS) on May 29. Solar wind
speed exceeding 600-700 km/s is possible based on recurrent trends.
Predicted sunspot numbers: May 29, 145; May 30, 138 - 151; May 31, 133 - 159;
June 1, 126 -166.
