Sharing ARRL Field Day with Others via Social Media

Social media is a powerful tool for connecting people. As hams on ARRL Field
Day [
http://www.arrl.org/fieldday?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] , we can leverage it to attract our friends and followers to come out and
visit our sites. Social media fans the flames of FOMO - the fear of missing
out - and it can be a powerful driver to get people to come out to Field Day,
even if they weren't planning on it. All we have to do is show people how
much fun we're having!

 
ARRL Social Media Specialist Alex Norstrom, KC1RMO, creates many of the posts
you see from ARRL. He says each social media platform has their own unique
advantages.

 
"Whether on Facebook, X, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, or any other social
media site - take advantage of the platform's features. Consider posting
photos or videos to your Instagram story or use photos to create a post on
Facebook that shows what's going on at your site," suggests Norstrom.

 
Posting content to your club's social pages, as well as your own personal
profiles, will help spread the word. There are some best practices that help
level up your social game.

 
Social media photo and video tips:
 
Don't just shoot the back of someone's head while they're seated at a radio.
Zoom with your feet (move closer to your subject) and get the camera into the
scene! Show us smiling faces and actions.


Shoot for the platform on which you plan to post the content. Widescreen or
landscape mode works well for Facebook or email. Vertical or portrait is
native to Instagram and TikTok, plus Meta Reels and stories on Facebook.
Either one is good for submission to ARRL for consideration in QST. Don't
limit yourself. If you see a good shot, grab it in both formats.


Your phone shoots just fine. If you have a smartphone that's been
manufactured in the last decade, the camera is going to be good enough. You
can bring out your fancy photo and video equipment if you like - but it's no
longer necessary. Many magazine covers are even shot on smartphones these
days.


Avoid backlighting. While most modern cameras have a good dynamic range and
can deal with many levels of lighting within an image, it's still best to
have the light on your subject.


See and be seen with hashtags. Use the hashtags #ARRLFD #AmateurRadio and
#HamRadio, along with a locator hashtag for your local area (for example,
Iowa could use #IA or #Iowa) in posts to help others see the content both
locally and around the web. Click on the hashtags and explore what others are
adding to the feed. Interact with their content by commenting, liking, or
sharing it. Radio connects - even on social media.

 
If there are minors in the content, make sure you have their parent or
guardian's consent to take and post the images. If you're submitting the

Field Day Safety - Tips From an Experienced Compliance Officer

One of the many ways to earn bonus points during ARRL Field Day is to have a
Safety Officer on site who makes use of the Safety Officer Checklist [
https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Field-Day/2022/1_91-FD Safety Officer.pdf ]
[PDF]. Safety shouldn't stop there! Many pictures of Field Day sites indicate
that running that checklist alone is inadequate.

Having been involved with safety professionally in the United States Air
Force and in the offshore oil industry, I have experienced what good safety
discipline can accomplish and the results when it fails.


As a very competitive Field Day organizer and operator, I firmly believe
safety comes ahead of points! Watching for and mitigating hazards must occur
for the entire event�-"setup, operating, teardown. Why do so few pictures
show personal protective equipment (PPE) in use? Where are the hard hats,
gloves, fire extinguishers, and Safety Officer with his or her checklist?

 
The typical rationalization is "all that is a waste of time," "it's quicker
to ignore what might happen," and "nothing happened last year." I always
return to the 4 Ps of safety: people, places, personal protective equipment
(PPE), and personal accountability. What do they mean?

 
Safety is everyone's responsibility, regardless of our roles. Everyone needs
a safety briefing, in general, and for specific tasks, such as raising a
tower. One person ignoring their responsibility can lead to an accident �-"
sometimes, a tragic accident.

 
Even at home, our stations can contain hazards, and most are unfamiliar with
added ones in the field. It's everyone's responsibility to identify and
mitigate�-"if not, eliminate�-"hazards. Warning tape and signs help make
places safer�-"use them!

 
PPE�-"insist upon hard hats where anything (tools, parts, towers, and masts)
could fall. Even when on the ground, they are tripping hazards. I once
stopped a tower operation when, after being warned, another ham showed up in
the drop zone without a hard hat! Except when operating rotating equipment,
gloves are essential in preventing injuries. Let everyone know that they
should bring their PPE (or club-provided PPE) if they do more than simply
operate a radio�-"no exceptions!

 
Personal accountability is simple, but often overlooked. Everyone involved in
using hazardous materials or tools must know and follow the safety rules. Do
not allow anyone to take part in a task until they are briefed and know how
the entire task is to occur. Stop the task if someone is inattentive. It
takes less than a second for a hazard to become a mistake that causes an
accident.

 
I lost a high school classmate on the nuclear submarine that sank�-"the
Thresher. The Navy completely redid their nuclear safety program. It was used
as an example after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, which led to my final
career, focused on safety compliance. As our local sports car racing club's
motto states: "Be Safe and Have Fun." Let that be your theme for every ARRL
Field Day.

ARRL Announces Logbook of The World(R) Systems Upgrade

ARRL's Logbook of The World(R) (LoTW(R)) is the 2nd most popular benefit
among members. It is also an extremely popular service internationally for
non-members, as it is the primary means for providing confirmations for ARRL
Awards, such as DXCC and Worked All States.


As a part of the ongoing modernization of the ARRL systems infrastructure,
LoTW will be receiving major upgrades to the operating system it is running
on, the relational database system it uses to store and access logbook and
awards data, and server hosting, where it will be fully migrated to the
cloud. These changes will, among other improvements, ensure LoTW performance
needs can be better met based on user demand.


ARRL's Logbook of The World(R) (LoTW(R)) is the 2nd most popular benefit
among members. It is also an extremely popular service internationally for
non-members, as it is the primary means for providing confirmations for ARRL
Awards, such as DXCC and Worked All States.


LoTW will be unavailable from June 27 to July 2, 2025, to complete these
upgrades. We will bring LoTW back online if it is available sooner than July
2.

The theme of this year's HAM RADIO 2025 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, is
"REMOTE RADIO - CONNECTING THE WORLD," demonstrating the unique way that
amateur radio is on the pulse of the times.

The 48th edition of Ham Radio 2025 is June 27 - 29, and more than 11,000
technical enthusiasts are expected to attend, bringing hobbyists from nearly
60 countries under one roof.

A reminder: The Annual 13 Colonies Special Event [ http://13colonies.us/ ]
2025, a popular summer operating event, begins July 1, from 9:00 AM to July
7, midnight Eastern Daylight Time.

This year, one station will be operating in each of the 13 original British
colonies, K2A - K2M, along with three bonus stations �-" WM3PEN,
Philadelphia: GB13COL, England, and TM13COL, France �-" each representing
their city, state, or country's role in America's colonial period. Amateur
radio operators and SWLs can participate in the event.

Announcements

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is scheduled to
participate in 2025 ARRL Field Day! Astronauts Nicole Ayers, KJ5GWI, and
Jonny Kim, KJ5HKP, will be the ham operators.

You can listen for them as NA1SS on 437.800 downlink and 145.900 CTCSS 67 Hz
uplink. Recommended power for the uplink is 5 watts, using a Yagi antenna if
possible.

Ground-to-space contacts count as only 1 QSL point, while ground-to-ground
contacts made via the ARISS repeater qualify for the satellite bonus.

Please remember to keep your contacts short so as many amateurs as possible
can participate.

The deadline to apply for ARRL Foundation grants is June 30, 2025. The ARRL
Foundation Grant Program awards limited funding to organizations for eligible
amateur radio-related projects and initiatives, particularly those with a
focus on educating, licensing, and supporting Amateur Radio activities.

Youth-based projects and initiatives are especially encouraged.
The ARRL Foundation Grant Program accepts proposals on a cyclical model three
times a year.

All proposals will be reviewed by the Grant Committee at the close of each
cycle.

Once the Committee agrees on the proposals to fund, they will be sent to the
full Foundation Board for a formal vote.

The ARRL Solar Report

ARRL Solar Report for June 26, 2025

Solar activity has been at low levels for the past 48 hours, with low-level
C-class flares.


There was a narrow coronal mass ejection (CME), likely associated with minor
flaring from Regions 4117 and 4118 between 1439 UTC and 1524 UTC on June 24.
Initial modeling indicated a miss, south and behind Earth's orbit. However,
it should be noted that analysis of this event is low confidence given the
assumed source location.


There is a chance for R1-R2 (minor-moderate) radio blackouts, with a slight
chance for X-class flares (R3-strong), persisting through June 27.


Solar wind parameters reflected a solar sector boundary crossing to the
negative solar sector. An enhanced solar wind regime is expected through June
27, due to recurrent negative-polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH
HSS) influences.


The 10.7 cm Radio Flux: June 26,130; June 27, 135; June 28, 140; June 29 -
30, 145; July 1 - 3, 140.


The Predicted Planetary A Index through June 27 is 5, 5, 8, 12, 25, 20, and
15, with a mean of 12.9. Predicted Planetary K Index is 2, 2,3, 4, 5, 5, and
4, with a mean of 3.6.
