Making sense of eastern Asian Late Quaternary
hominin variability
A greater degree of Late Quaternary hominin
morphological variability is present in
eastern Asia than previously assumed. Indeed,
a number of distinct populations are present,
some that now have new specific names: Homo
floresiensis; H. luzonensis; H. longi;
H. juluensis. With this piece, we describe the
various groupings based on the current hominin
fossil record of eastern Asia.
It is interesting that his cranial capacity matches exactly my thesis which says that brain volume is linked to thermoregulation. Per this thesis, the biggest brains would be where it is the coldest. East sides of continents are colder than west sides, so north of China would be the coldest (this is why Vikings reached America, but Chinese didn't), so the brain volume there should be the biggest. Associated fauna (Paleoarctic) also matches this.
So, per this thesis humans with different brain volume shouldn't be automatically placed in different species, it is the same species, the only difference is the temperature of the environment.
