Amazingly enough,
https://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/earth-s-core-has-slowed-so-much-it-s-moving-backward-scientists-confirm-here-s-what-it-could-mean-1.6952926this article was written from a sober perspective, and not
sensationalized at all. Which is a refreshing change from articles
about asteroids passing by at entirely safe distances.
However, I think they may have gone too far. If the Earth's core has
slowed so much that its rotation has even reversed direction, this
could have a larger consequence than just not needing leap seconds for
a while in the future.
And by larger consequences, I don't mean negative leap seconds.
Since -1 times -1 equals plus 1, or since the external driving
magnetic field is still in the same direction, maybe the consequence
I'm worried about really isn't a danger. But the first thing I thought
of when I read the article was that the phenomenon could be a sign of
an impending magnetic field reversal, which would be bad.
