Absolutely - free country and all that. (Or perhaps they've been bitten by Y.)
But people who choose to use newsreaders that can't handle printable ASCII non-destructively cannot reasonably expect software developers to amend their code as a workaround. I would reason that it's the people with the problem who need to own and address their problem. That's not to say they can't seek and receive help and advice, of course, but they can't expect to be able to bend other people around them.
