Garage lights which are old fluoros are the last remaining power hog -
they clock in at 500W when they are on.

Fluorescent tubes are rated at about 10 Watts per foot. Does that mean
you have 50 ft of fluorescent tubes in your garage? It must be
blindingly bright !
They are older ex-industrial ones in pairs and 8x 6' so not a bad guess.
Four are immediately above the workbench which also has natural light.
Our garage doors roll up and over (i.e., move from the vertical
plane to the horizontal). So, with the door open, about half of the
ceiling is blocked (lights typically affixed to ceilings).
As we tend to BACK into the garage, this means the engine compartment
of a vehicle is shaded by it's *hood* as well as being in a location that
doesn't have overhead light.
Annoying to have to rely on "drop lights" in that situation.

(Similarly annoying to try to position overhead cameras where the
raised garage door obscures their view!)
