When he was president Trump certainly acted as if Putin was pulling his strings - Putin's intervention in the 2016 election is probably what got Trump his very narrow margin of victory.
Putin's obvious interest was in getting the US to go for the worst president on offer, but there were suggestions that Putin did have some dirt on Trump.
