Academic brilliance and common sense seldom go hand in hand.
Cursitor Doom and John Larkin don't seem to know many people who are academically brilliant. Most of the ones I've known have been thoroughly sensible outside their specialities, which does manifest itself in a capacity to avoid creeps like Cursitor Doom, amongst other useful skills.
