Samuel Pepys certainly thought so and did plenty of it, back in those long
gone days when England was merry.

Cursitor Doom may well have tertiary syphilis - it only affects about 2% of those who get infected, and affects a variety of organs. When it goes to the brain it causes General Paralysis of the Insane, which occupied most of the lunatic asylum beds back then. Watering can scrotum was another manifestation.
There are plenty of others. Henry the Eighth died of one of them.
