To be fair, they haven't been around for all that long, and the world wide web has made all sorts of data much more easily available than it was twenty years ago, and changed some aspects of society fairly drastically.
Google started off with a better than usual search engine, and it's expansion was driven by the way that people used it. It would have been nice if the expansion could have been planned with some long term aim in mind, but innovation tends to go in unexpected directions, and innovators do tend to favour developments that make them more money - if they don't some other innovator fills the gap.
